BE RIGHT BACK, work in progress
1/3

I N T R O D U C T I O N

How have the local shops and businesses in the SEE3 area evolved over the years alongside the
communities of Sydenham, Kirkdale and Forest Hill?

As an answer, an Observation Documentary Film "BE RIGHT BACK" will be developed by Dr Bada, former Researcher
in Sociolinguistics, actually a resident in the Sydenham area and a volunteer for SEE3 organisation, and Massimo
Saverio Maida, Film Director and Screewriter, resident in London.

Using the local shops as a focal point, the documentary will look into the common ground that regulate interactions
in individuals and the different negotiation of identity in the diverse and lively communities populating Sydenham,
Kirkdale and Forest Hill.

The starting point for the idea and the production of the documentary film BE RIGHT BACK is the in-progress marketing
project for the SEE3 website, featuring interviews with the owners and short videos about local businesses featuring
interviews with the owners and short videos about local businesses. Dr Bada will be involved in the creation of narrative
material and the development of the scripts for the planned videos. The main theoretical framework lies at the
intersection between the sociological concept of super-diversity, identity and urban culture video documentation inside
the realm of a complex city of mutable limits as London and its boroughs actually are.

C O N C E P T

The film describes the communities of Sydenham, Kirkdale and Forest Hill, taking the shops and their
goods as a privileged point of observation. The shops are both a merging point and a place of origin where it is possible to collect valuable and heterogeneousfragments of reality.

The film will turn them into significant elements to create a choral story, without any preconceived thesis, while trying
to show SEE3's urban environment in its daily life. The camera will follow gestures, practices, actions and choices as they will appear in a number of shops in the target areas. Personal stories are in fact part of unique and unrepeatable moments, though at the same time they can be a perfect reflection of identification into / belonging to a particular community.
